How is it obvious that the authors of Matthew and Luke * * embellished the story of Jesus' birth?

To make him appear to be a perfect fulfillment of prophecy? Neither Mark nor John mentions this very miraculous birth at all. Why Paul never mentions or even implies that the Virgin Birth?

The simple fact that the two stories are different, making it quite clear that each author was trying to shoehorn his story of prophecy.
