Server Edition Operating
2009

Can I use "Windows Vista Home Premium Edition" as an operating system on a web server?
I already have a legal copy on disk. Ignore, that it is not an ideal server OS. Ignore the bias in favor of Linux or other systems. (And I plan to install additional security software and a hardware firewall.) Is there a technical or licensing reasons I could or should not run "Vista Home Premium as the OS on my web server?
Yes, because Microsoft does not want you must install IIS on Home Edition. Now if you want to get a copy of Apache then that should get you started. But Apache runs best on a Linux machine. Walk get an old computer and put linux on it and let it serve up your pages. RJ

Operating Systems
$3.98 B> The fifth edition of Operating Systems: A Systematic View offers a practical and applied introduction to operating system concepts, aimed at people interested in using computers, operating systems, and networks. The authors take a "systematic view" of the subject, where they provide insight into what is going on beneath the surface instead of focusing so much on OS theory. The intent is to show why operating systems are needed and what, at a functional level, they do. The book features an engaging, reader-friendly presentation written at a pace and level appropriate for novices, and contains extensive illustrations to visually reinforce concepts. Readers are guided through some of today's most widely used operating systems, including Linux, UNIX, and Windows 2000. Also included is coverage of several modern topics and technologies, with chapters on the Windows interface, Intel Pentium architecture, and Windows internals, as well as a section on network operating systems with chapters on client/server networks, Windows 2000, Novell, and the Internet. This book is designed for people from non-technical fields and backgrounds who simply need to know how to interact with, rather than how to design, an operating system. It requires no background in programming and only a working knowledge of basic algebra. It will also be of interest to computer programmers, technical managers, and applied practitioners who want a practical and applied introduction to operating systems. |

$3.48 This Updated edition of Operating Systems, 2e brings this edition up-to-date in regards to the latest Operating Systems. It features material on the latest version of Windows 2000 and Linux, and also provides updated lab exercises for courses that do user-level programming projects in lab (whether they be using UNIX, Linux or Windows).Gary Nutt provides an understanding of contemporary operating system practice through a complete discussion of operating system principles, supplemented with code, algorithms, implementation issues, and lab exercises. The book's flexible arrangement, which separates principles from practice, allows professors to choose the appropriate breadth and depth of each topic presentation, as well as the balance they wish to strike between principles and practice. Each chapter begins with a conceptual presentation, then moves into the underlying theory that supports the concept. Examples (generic and specific commercial OS examples) support these presentations.Operating Systems also covers modern topics such as threads, concurrency, and distributed systems. It addresses both quantitative and qualitative theory, but is not overly mathematically sophisticated. It is an ideal text for professors who are interested in introducing students to core operating system concepts by and reinforcing these concepts with examples from and practice with popular real-world operating systems, namely Linux/UNIX and Windows 2000. |

Introduction to Operating Systems
$12.62 An introduction to operating systems, covering processes, states of processes, synchronization, programming methods of synchronization, main memory, secondary storage and file systems. Although the book is short, it covers all the essentials and opens up synchronization by introducing a metaphor: producer--consumer that other authors have employed. The difference is that the concept is presented without the programming normally involved with the concept. The thinking is that using a warehouse, the size of which is the shared variable in synchronization terms, without the programming will aid in understanding to this difficult concept. The book also covers main memory, secondary storage with file systems, and concludes with a brief discussion of the client-server paradigm and the way in which client-server impacts the design of the World-Wide Web. |

Distributed Operating Systems & Algorithms
$102 Distributed Operating Systems and Algorithms integrates into one text both the theory and implementation aspects of distributed operating systems for the first time. This innovative book provides the reader with knowledge of the important algorithms necessary for an in-depth understanding of distributed systems; at the same time it motivates the study of these algorithms by presenting a systems framework for their practical application. The first part of the book is intended for use in an advanced course on operating systems and concentrates on parallel systems, distributed systems, real-time systems, and computer networks. The second part of the text is written for a course on distributed algorithms with a focus on algorithms for asynchronous distributed systems. While each of the two parts is self-contained, extensive cross-referencing allows the reader to emphasize either theory or implementation or to cover both elements of selected topics. Features: Integrates and balances coverage of the advanced aspects of operating systems with the distributed algorithms used by these systems. Includes extensive references to commercial and experimental systems to illustrate the concepts and implementation issues. Provides precise algorithm description and explanation of why these algorithms were developed. Structures the coverage of algorithms around the creation of a framework for implementing a replicated server-a prototype for implementing a fault-tolerant and highly available distributed system. Contains programming projects on such topics as sockets, RPC, threads, and implementation of distributed algorithms using these tools. Includes an extensive annotated bibliography for eachchapter, pointing the reader to recent developments. Solutions to selected exercises, templates to programming problems, a simulator for algorithms for distributed synchronization, and teaching tips for selected topics are available to qualified instructors from Addison Wesley. 0201498383B04062001 |

Operating Systems: Design and Implementation (Second Edition)
$5 The Second Edition of this best-selling introductory operating systems text is the only textbook that successfully balances theory and practice. The authors accomplish this important goal by first covering all the fundamental operating systems concepts such as processes, interprocess communication, input/output, virtual memory, file systems, and security. These principles are then illustrated through the use of a small, but real, UNIX-like operating system called MINIX that allows students to test their knowledge in hands-on system design projects. Each book includes a CD-ROM that contains the full MINIX source code and two simulators for running MINIX on various computers. |

Learning the Unix Operating System
$7.48 A handy book for someone just starting with Unix or Linux, and an ideal primer for Mac and PC users of the Internet who need to know a little about Unix on the systems they visit. The most effective introduction to Unix in print, covering Internet usage for email, file transfers, web browsing, and many major and minor updates to help the reader navigate the ever-expanding capabilities of the operating system.pIf you are new to Unix, this concise book will tell you just what you need to get started and no more. Unix was one of the first operating systems written in C, a high-level programming language, and its natural portability and low price made it a popular choice among universities. Initially, two main dialects of Unix existed: one produced by AT&T known as System V, and one developed at UC Berkeley and known as BSD. In recent years, many other dialects have been created, including the highly popular Linux operating system and the new Mac OS X (a derivative of BSD).pLearning the Unix Operating System is a handy book for someone just starting with Unix or Linux, and it's an ideal primer for Mac and PC users of the Internet who need to know a little about Unix on the systems they visit. The fifth edition is the most effective introduction to Unix in print, covering Internet usage for email, file transfers, web browsing, and many major and minor updates to help the reader navigate the ever-expanding capabilities of the operating system: In response to the popularity of Linux, the book now focuses on the popular bash shell preferred by most Linux users. Since the release of the fourth edition, the Internet and its many functions has become part of most computer user's lives. A new chapter explains how to use ftp, pine for mail, and offers useful knowledge on how to surf the web. Today everyone is concerned about security.
